There is little doubt that the Detroit Tigers have an explosive team and an above average pitching staff. They absolutely are one of the toughest teams in Major League Baseball and there is no way around that. What they also were this past weekend is just another victim of the Texas Rangers who still make a pretty good case for being the best team in the game. After winning two of three from the Houston Astros it must have felt like playing the AL all-star team to face the Rangers. The Rangers promptly beat the Tigers three out of four games.
Over that stretch the Tigers lost precious ground to a streaking Cleveland Indians team. The good deal for the Tigers is they knew they were just about to face the Indians. Though the Indians aren?t an easy assignment for anyone right now, the Rangers seemed to clearly have the Tigers number. The opening game of the Indians series served to snap the AL Central leader?s winning streak and draw the Tigers closer by a game. They are playing well in the second game as well and appear to be ready to fight for a series win if not a sweep.
I think there are reasons a team like the Tigers wind up winning it all or almost winning it all year in and year out. They lose four of five games but still were able to get their heads on straight for the big division rival series. The Indians very well might come back and pull away further but there should be no deceiving going on for the part of the Indians. The Tigers are not going anywhere all season long and anyone planning to get to the post season will have to take them down directly in order to do it. That isn?t an easy task for anyone other than the Rangers at this point.
