Singer George Michael out of hospital after car accident

LONDON (Reuters) - British singer George Michael is out of hospital after being treated for head injuries from a car accident two weeks ago, his website said on Wednesday.

The 49-year-old former Wham! frontman, who has been "under observation" since the May 16th accident, has been discharged and is resting, www.georgemichael.com said.

"We can confirm that George Michael has been discharged from hospital and continues to rest and recuperate," the message on Michael's website said. "He is well and thanks everyone for all the messages of support."

British media have reported that the "Careless Whisper" singer fell out of a car he was travelling in on the M1 motorway just outside London during rush hour - the latest of a string of accidents and health scares.

Last year, Michael cancelled a tour of Australia due to "major anxiety" brought on by a 2011 battle with severe pneumonia in Vienna, where he was treated in intensive care for a month.

The singer has sold an estimated 100 million records over his career, but in the past few years has hit the headlines for his personal life more often than for his music.

In 1998 he was arrested in California for "engaging in a lewd act" in a public toilet. He has also had a number of run-ins with British police for possession of narcotics, and served time in jail for driving under the influence of cannabis.

U.S. spelling bee starts with a new challenge : definitions

By Ian Simpson

OXON HILL, Maryland (Reuters) - Sometimes-nervous contestants in the United States' Scripps National Spelling Bee launched two days of competition on Wednesday, facing the new challenge of not only having to spell obscure words correctly, but also knowing what they mean.

A total of 281 contestants aged 8 to 14 from across the United States and other countries took to the stage for a preliminary spelling round in the spelling bee. The finals are on Thursday night.

For the first time since it began in 1927, the contest is requiring young spellers in preliminary and semifinal rounds to take a computerized vocabulary test. Organizers say it is part of the Bee's commitment to deepening contestants' command of English.

Sixteen spellers were eliminated in a first onstage round, with a second round to come for survivors. They stumbled on such words as "sinecure," a paid job with little work; "weissnichtwo," an imaginary place; and "yannigan," player in an individualized baseball game.

Some spellers were visibly nervous before advancing to the microphone in the packed auditorium, clutching arms to sides, jiggling feet or crossing themselves.

"I felt a little nervous before I got on stage, but once I was on stage I was OK," said Matthew Griffin, a 12-year-old home schooled eighth grader from Bailey, N.C., who correctly spelled "panglossian," or extreme optimism.

"It's pretty cool. I've made a lot of friends," he said.

Owen Duffy, 13, from Fort Johnson Middle School in Charleston, S.C., did not fare as well.

Given "langlauf" to spell, the seventh grader asked chief pronouncer Jacques Bailly for the pronunciation of the German word for cross-country skiing several times.

"Langlauf? Langlauf? Langlauf?" Duffy said slowly. He barely finished spelling it, incorrectly, before his time ran out.

Almost all the contestants asked for the origin of the word, the kind of word and a definition, which is allowed as an aid to spelling. They then wrote it out on the palm of their hands with a fingertip while spelling aloud.

DEFINE THAT

Since 2002, a written or computer spelling test has been a component that, along with onstage spelling, factored in determining which spellers advanced to the semi-finals.

This year, competitors will advance to the semi-finals and finals based on their onstage spelling, as well as computer-based spelling and vocabulary questions. Vocabulary evaluation will count for half of a speller's overall score.

Contestants said the multiple-choice test taken on Tuesday was fairly easy for them. Amber Born, 14, a home-schooled eighth grader from Marblehead, Massachusetts, said after the first round of spelling that it "was good, it was fun."

Standing next to Born, Katherine Wang, an 11-year-old sixth grader from the Qooco School in Beijing, called it "nerve-wracking."

"It was multiple choice, so you could narrow it down," Born said. She and Wang had met at last year's contest and stayed in touch through e-mail.

Griffin said the test was "a little hard. I knew how to spell the words but now having to know them makes the challenge a little harder."

Paige Kimble, the Bee's executive director who won the competition in 1981, told a news conference the decision to add the vocabulary test had come after about a year and a half of discussion.

A key element was support from spellers and their parents who believed that adding the test would increase the tournament's prestige, she said.

The contestants hail from all 50 states and the District of Columbia, U.S. territories and Defense Department schools around the world. Some contestants come from the Bahamas, Canada, China, Ghana, Jamaica, Japan and South Korea.

The Bee is taking place at the Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center outside Washington. It is being broadcast by ESPN.

The contestants range from third to eighth graders, with 116 speaking more than one language. The group is 52 percent girls and 48 percent boys, organizers said.

Gene that helps honey bees find flowers (and get back home) discovered

May 29, 2013 ? Honey bees don't start out knowing how to find flowers or even how to get around outside the hive. Before they can forage, they must learn how to navigate a changing landscape and orient themselves in relation to the sun.

In a new study, researchers report that a regulatory gene known to be involved in learning and the detection of novelty in vertebrates also kicks into high gear in the brains of honey bees when they are learning how to find food and bring it home.

Activity of this gene, called Egr, quickly increases in a region of the brain known as the mushroom bodies whenever bees try to find their way around an unfamiliar environment, the researchers observed. This gene is the insect equivalent of a transcription factor found in mammals. Transcription factors regulate the activity of other genes.

The researchers found that the increased Egr activity did not occur as a result of exercise, the physical demands of learning to fly or the task of memorizing visual cues; it increased only in response to the bees' exposure to an unfamiliar environment. Even seasoned foragers had an uptick in Egr activity when they had to learn how to navigate in a new environment.

"This discovery gives us an important lead in figuring out how honey bees are able to navigate so well, with such a tiny brain," said Gene Robinson, a professor of entomology and neuroscience and director of the Institute for Genomic Biology at the University of Illinois. "And finding that it's Egr, with all that this gene is known to do in vertebrates, provides another demonstration that some of the molecular mechanisms underlying behavioral plasticity are deeply conserved in evolution." Robinson led the study with graduate student Claudia Lutz.

Computers and tech obsolete by 2033? - Science & Technology of ...

20 years feels a little optomistic. i mean i'm sure computers won't be the same but they won't be gone completely. People will probably still have desktops in their homes because the desktop computer in 20 years time will have an insane amount of power. Software could pick up and alot of computing could be done in the cloud, but you still need some hardware too ofcourse. Remember that before we can make computers seem to dissapear, we've got to put them everywhere first!

?

One of the big problems with computation is that hardware development is moving so much faster than software development

Boise State Football: 7 Biggest Fan Favorites in Broncos' History

When Kellen Moore stepped on Boise State?s campus as a freshman in 2007, not even the wildest expectations could have matched what he ended up doing for the university.

A four year starter for the Broncos from 2008-2011, Moore would go on to become the FBS Division?s all-time leader in wins with 50, as well as set school records for career passing yards and passing touchdowns, wins and passing touchdowns in a season.

Moore can be credited with finally getting the Broncos over the hump as a team that year in and year out is capable of competing with college football?s most powerful programs. During his time as a Bronco, Moore was able to lead Boise State to victory over teams such as TCU, Georgia, Virginia Tech and Oregon.

However, despite all of his accolades, Moore may remain as one of the most beloved players in Boise State football history more because of what he was unable to accomplish.

A two-time All-American and fourth place finisher in the Heisman Trophy race, Moore played in only one BCS bowl despite losing only three times in his career.

Then, Moore went undrafted in the 2012 NFL Draft.

Thus, many would say Moore received the short end of the stick.

The reasons may change from person to person, but the outcome is the same: Kellen Moore is the greatest quarterback, and perhaps biggest fan favorite, in Boise State football history.

Eleven suspects detained over Male? store attack as police continue gang hunt thumbnail

Police have said 11 suspects have been taken into custody for alleged involvement in a stabbing attack at the ?Home X? store in the capital on May 19 that hospitalised one male victim ? with authorities?pledging?to continue a crack down on gang activity.

In a statement released today, police claimed that the 11 individuals, all male suspects between 17 and 27 years of age, were detained on the 9th floor of the Aroodhaage building in Male? as part of investigations into the store assault.

?Out of the 11 individuals brought in, there were two 19 year old males, one 27 year old male, one 20 year old male, one 21 year old male, four 18 year old males and two 17 year old males,? police stated following the operation.

Local media reported at the time that the victim of the attack had fled into an electronics store in Male? in order to shelter from a group that proceeded to assault him using a ?sharp object?.

The store attack was among a series of stabbings reported across the capital this month ? ?prompting police to form a special task force designed to try and combat gang violence.

The now-active task force consists of members from the Forensics Directorate, Intelligence and Covert Policing Command, Information and Communication Directorate, Central Operations Command and Technical Police from the Divisional Operations Command of the Maldives Police Service.

?Criminal at large?

Speaking to local media today, Police Commissioner Abdulla Riyaz said members of the taskforce were now searching for 50 ?high-profile? suspects alleged to have had involvement with gang-related activities

?They are a threat to the society. We consider everyone, who had not been punished for a crime they had committed, as a criminal at large,? he was quoted by local newspaper Haveeru as saying.

Riyaz was not responding to calls from Minivan News at time of press regarding how the 50 suspects had been identified or if they belonged to specific groups. ?The police media department was also not responding to calls at time of press.

Riya?s comments were made less than a week after he alleged politicians were most often responsible for encouraging gang-related activities in the capital island Male?.

The claims echoed the findings of a report into the country?s gang culture published last year by the Asia Foundation that found politicians and businessmen paid gangs to assault rivals, damage property, and in some cases have opponents killed.

Clear approach

Speaking to Minivan News earlier this month, former head of police intelligence Chief Superintendent Mohamed ?MC? Hameed claimed the stabbing incidents were ?probably? retaliatory and inter-related based on media reports at the time.

Hameed also raised accused the country?s police service of presently lacking a clear approach in terms of reducing and dealing with violence crimes and criminals.

?Not being able to police Male? ? the most populated city in the country ? due to the lack of an effective strategy and the disconnect between the key areas of criminal investigations, intelligence gathering, and front line policing is a big issue,? he added.

In addition to the lack of a ?very effective policing approach? to combat violent crime, low level crimes had also not been addressed, according to Hameed.

?A lot of antisocial behavior goes unnoticed and unaddressed by the police, such as harassment and public nuisance. For example, girls of a very young age are harassed, even while walking with their families. Additionally, juveniles are seen under the influence of drugs and intoxicated in public,? he explained.

Hameed advocated that a strong, more integrated, holistic approach is needed that applies a broader strategy to effectively reduce crime.

?Increasing police officers physical presence, as well as effective targeting of high profile offenders and hotspots needs to be addressed,? he said.

?Collaboration between criminal investigations, intelligence gathering, and front line policing are three areas that have never worked that effectively,? he added at the time.

Sprint, SoftBank reach deal with U.S. over security concerns

By Alina Selyukh and Nathan Layne

WASHINGTON/TOKYO (Reuters) - Sprint Nextel Corp and Japan's SoftBank Corp have reached an agreement with U.S. authorities on the national security aspects of the Japanese firm's pending $20.1 billion deal to win control of the U.S. wireless carrier, people familiar with the matter said.

As a part of that agreement, the U.S. government will have a veto over new equipment purchases by Sprint in certain circumstances if the two companies merge, one source said.

The government will also establish a four-member oversight committee to make sure the companies abide by their national security promises. A Sprint board member will sit on that committee, said the source, who did not want to be named because the information was not public.

Formal announcement of the highly unusual agreement - drawn up amid fears of Chinese espionage - is likely to come early on Wednesday in the United States, four sources told Reuters.

Japanese mobile operator SoftBank agreed to buy a 70 percent stake in Sprint last October. That deal faces a challenge from Dish Network Corp, a U.S. satellite TV provider which last month launched a rival $25.5 billion bid for Sprint.

No one at Sprint was immediately available to comment, while SoftBank declined comment on Wednesday.

DISH WARNING

Dish has taken out full-page ads in Washington newspapers warning that a SoftBank-Sprint merger would threaten U.S. national security.

U.S. Senator Charles Schumer expressed strong concern last Friday about the proposed SoftBank-Sprint merger, warning it could expose the United States to Chinese cyber attacks.

Sources said SoftBank agreed with U.S. authorities to remove equipment made by China's Huawei Technologies Co Ltd from Sprint and Clearwire Corp's networks if the Japanese company completed its deal by the end of 2016. SoftBank President Masayoshi Son has said he will pull equipment made by China's ZTE Corp if asked by U.S. regulators.

The House Intelligence Committee last year urged U.S. telecoms firms not to do business with Huawei and ZTE because it said potential Chinese state influence on the companies posed a threat to U.S. security. SoftBank uses equipment made by ZTE and Huawei in Japan.

Last week, Clearwire's board recommended Sprint's sweetened buyout offer for the company after Sprint raised its bid to $3.40 per share, from $2.97 per share, for the 50 percent it doesn't already own. Clearwire shareholders will vote on the deal on Friday.

Dish reiterated its warnings on Tuesday that a SoftBank-Sprint tie-up posed national security risks.

"We believe the U.S. government should proceed with deliberation and caution in turning over assets of national strategic importance - such as the Sprint fiber backbone and wireless networks - to a foreign-controlled entity with significant ties to China," spokesman Bob Toevs said. "Oversight and accountability for our national network infrastructure is critical at a time when offshore attacks on that infrastructure continue to rise."

"POLITICS, PROTECTIONISM"

In an email, Huawei's U.S.-based spokesman William Plummer said: "No matter who wins the bid for Sprint, the future Sprint network will be sourced, in part, from China, just as are the networks of AT&T and Verizon and every other carrier. Every telecom infrastructure vendor, regardless of geography of headquarters, conducts R&D, codes software and manufactures gear ... in China.

"Suggestions that networks and data will somehow be made safer by blackballing vendors based on geography of headquarters are either uninformed or dissembling," Plummer added.

"Anyone who truly wants more secure American networks and data should focus instead on establishing apolitical geography-agnostic global and industry-wide supply chains and operational standards to raise the cyber-security bar for everyone. Anything else is just politics and protectionism," he said.

Industry experts say the U.S. Federal Communications Commission is unlikely to rule before Sprint makes a final choice of buyer and the inter-agency Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS) completes its own review. Sprint shareholders are due to vote on the SoftBank offer on June 12.

CFIUS reviews are highly secretive and weigh whether foreign ownership of a U.S. company poses threats to or increases vulnerability of the nation's infrastructure and assets. Although technically voluntary, foreign bidders prefer asking the CFIUS to review their deals before completing them.

"This is SoftBank clearly doing whatever it takes to satisfy the U.S. government they are not posing any national security risks. It's a pretty smart move on their part to diffuse that aspect of the problem," said Neil Juggins, a regional telecoms analyst for Hong Kong-based JI Asia, an affiliate of Societe Generale.

SoftBank shares last traded 2.1 percent higher in Tokyo, outperforming the broader index's 0.5 percent gain.

Christchurch City Councillors Want Asset-Sale Rethink... | Stuff.co.nz

The idea of selling non-strategic Christchurch City Council assets is finding favour with some city councillors.

While opposed to selling off council-controlled organisations (CCOs) such as Christchurch International Airport Ltd, the Lyttelton Port Company, Orion and Enable Services, many are open to the idea of divesting some other assets that are classed as strategic, if the price is right.

"The infrastructure companies should never be for sale as far as I am concerned, but as for everything else, if it's too good a deal to turn down, then let's consider it," Cr Barry Corbett said yesterday.

Last week, Prime Minister John Key suggested partial sales of CCOs as a way of helping fund the city's anchor projects and ease the council's debt burden for earthquake recovery.

That idea has already been ruled out by the council, which in its draft Three Year Plan signalled its intention to hang onto its assets.

However, there is a growing willingness among councillors to at least have more debate on the issue.

Cr Jamie Gough said it was time the council reviewed what constituted a strategic asset in the post-quake environment and considered sale options for those that were not.

"How can we make decisions on strategic and non-strategic assets when there's no clear line of thought on which one is which?"

The council had only three possible revenue streams from which to fund its share of the rebuild - borrowing, rates or asset sales - and it made sense to explore all three, Gough said.

"We need to define what a strategic asset is for Christchurch. Everything changed on February 22, 2011, and I think we'd be remiss, if not stupid, to not get clarity on where that leaves us with regard to strategic CCOs."

Whether the council needed to have control of a contracting company such as City Care, a "bit player" in an open and competitive market, was debatable, he said.

However, Mayor Bob Parker said the only assets the council could consider selling easily were its land holdings, such as the Henderson properties, but panicking about funding for the city's anchor projects was unnecessary.

"There's nothing stopping us having that discussion [about asset sales] in the future, but it's certainly not necessary at the moment and it would be foolhardy, really foolhardy, to rush into that."

Deputy Mayor Ngaire Button said she was open to a public debate on which assets were non-negotiable and which could be sold.

"Some assets, in the right environment, we could sell," she said, noting it was healthy to review assets on a regular basis "just as you do at home".

Council corporate and financial committee chairwoman Cr Helen Broughton believed some parcels of council-owned land could be sold, but she personally believed there were merits in having companies such as Red Bus and City Care in council hands.

NOT FOR SALE ? but should they be?

Red Bus Ltd ($23 million)

City Care Ltd ($136m)

Selwyn Plantation Board ($16m)

EcoCentral ($7m)?

Report: Pistorius fined for unpaid taxes

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Oscar Pistorius was audited and fined for unpaid taxes after having to declare his assets during his bail hearing, a South African newspaper reported Sunday as the Olympian prepares for his first court appearance in nearly four months.

The City Press newspaper said that the South African Revenue Service fined the double-amputee runner "less than one million rand" (under $105,000), which he paid.

Pistorius' uncle, Arnold Pistorius, said "Oscar is tax compliant" in a brief statement to The Associated Press later Sunday without elaborating further on any of the details of the report.

Oscar Pistorius is charged with premeditated murder for the Valentine's Day shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp at his upscale house in Pretoria in the pre-dawn hours of Feb. 14, and will appear in court on June 4 for what prosecutors say will be a brief hearing while the police investigation of his killing of Steenkamp continues.

He denies murder and says he shot Steenkamp in error after mistaking her for an intruder in his home.

The 26-year-old Pistorius declared in a court affidavit during his application to be freed on bail in February that he earned around $630,000 a year and owned three houses and a vacant plot in South Africa with a combined value of nearly $1 million.

The City Press said he owns another house in Johannesburg, which the newspaper claims he bought for 9.8 million rand ($1.02 million) this year. That house was not declared as part of his assets in his affidavit. City Press did not say if that house was bought before or after the killing of Steenkamp at Pistorius' $500,000 Pretoria villa, which Pistorius said was his main residence.

Much of Pistorius' income is believed to have come from big-name sponsors Nike and eyewear company Oakley, which suspended their deals with the Paralympic champion after he was charged with murder.

His family has denied previous media reports that he is facing financial ruin because of spiraling legal costs, saying in a statement in March that those legal bills, while huge, were "under control."

"While the family doesn't deny that Oscar's legal expenses are massive and that he has sold off some of his investments, including his racehorses ... Oscar will evaluate the cost situation on a day-to-day basis and make decisions as required," the family said.

Pistorius, now free on $113,000 bail, also has decided to step away from competition for the rest of the year to focus on his upcoming trial, which is likely to be long and expensive for him and where he will face a life sentence in prison with a minimum of 25 years before parole if convicted of premeditated murder in Steenkamp's killing.

One of Pistorius' teammates from last year's London Olympics, LJ van Zyl, said in Britain that the Blade Runner's case and his absence from track competition also was taking a heavy toll on South African athletics and its other athletes.

"If Oscar is at the competition, the South African stadium is full and now that has gone," said Van Zyl, who ran with Pistorius on South Africa's 4x400 relay team in the Olympic final in London and trained at the same track as the double-amputee in Pretoria. "So athletics is really taking a dip now he is off the track. In the beginning it was really tough for every one of us."

"It was media crazy at the track. Now it's still painful for all the athletes. It's sad, but I try to focus on my thing," he said.

Van Zyl said he was planning to travel and stay with Pistorius in Manchester for Saturday's Great City Games before Pistorius had to cancel all his competitions in the wake of Steenkamp's death and his murder charge.

"I get like a weird, sorry feeling and I also miss Oscar," Van Zyl said. "We planned to stay together here and also travel to Manchester and now it's all gone."

Prosecutors say Pistorius' June 4 court hearing, the first since bail proceedings and his first public appearance in nearly four months, will likely take less than 10 minutes and the case will be postponed until a date in August while police continue to gather and analyze evidence and identify and interview witnesses.

Saudi death toll from new virus reaches 18

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia (AP) ? Saudi Arabia's Health Ministry says a woman has died from a new respiratory virus related to SARS, bringing the total number of deaths in the kingdom to 18.

Saudi Arabia remains the center for the virus as investigators from the World Health Organization seek more clues about its origins and how it is spread.

Last week, WHO officials said at least 22 people have died from the virus worldwide out of 44 cases.

The Saudi Health Ministry announced the virus' latest victim in a statement Sunday. The ministry says a foreigner also died of the virus in Saudi Arabia last Tuesday after having pneumonia-like symptoms. No other details were released.

The virus has been compared to SARS, a respiratory infection that surfaced in China in late 2002.

The lackluster lunar eclipse will star in a free webcast by the Slooh Space Camera, which offers live views of the night sky via remotely operated telescopes. The eclipse webcast will begin at 11:37 p.m. EDT (0337 May 25 GMT).

A map shows the area where the penumbral lunar eclipse of May 25, 2013, will be visible on Earth.

You can watch the lunar eclipse webcast on SPACE.com courtesy of the Slooh Space Camera. The event comes on the heels of a "ring of fire" solar eclipse on May 10 and another partial lunar eclipse on April 25.

Stargazing experts predict that tonight's eclipse won't be anywhere near as impressive as the other recent eclipses because only a tiny sliver of the May full moon will pass through the penumbra, the outermost part of Earth's shadow.

"It will thus be impossible to notice anything out of the ordinary concerning the moon's overall appearance," SPACE.com's skywatching columnist Joe Rao explained in a viewing guide today. "It will, in fact look like any other full moon."

Lunar eclipses can only occur when the moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the sun, which occurs during the full moon phase. When the moon is perfectly aligned with the Earth, it is completely in the Earth's shadow, causing a total lunar eclipse that can yield amazing views of a blood-red moon. However, the moon's orbit is tilted, so it does not line up perfectly each month. When the moon only passes through part of the Earth's shadow, it causes a partial lunar eclipse. A dip through the outer edges of the shadow, like tonight's eclipse, is a penumbral lunar eclipse.

Tonight's penumbral lunar eclipse will be primarily visible from the Americas and western Africa, according to NASA eclipse expert Fred Espenak at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. It will begin at 11:53 p.m. EDT (0353 GMT) and end just before 12:27 a.m. EDT (0427 GMT). The time of greatest eclipse, when the moon will be at its deepest point into Earth's shadow, will be at 12:10 a.m. EDT (0410 GMT), according to Espenak.

The moon will barely graze Earth's penumbra of May 25, 2013, as shown in this diagram.

The Slooh eclipse webcast will originate from two telescope feeds from the firm's observatory in the Canary Islands off the west coast of Africa. The webcast will include a recorded audio commentary by astronomer Bob Berman of Astronomy magazine.

You can follow the webcast directly from the Slooh Space Camera here: http://www.slooh.com/

The full moon of each month has a series of traditional names given by many different cultures. The full moon of May is most widely known as the Full Flower Moon, but has also been called the Milk Full Moon and the Corn Planting Full Moon.

US durable goods orders rise 3.3 percent in April

WASHINGTON (AP) ? U.S. orders for long-lasting manufactured goods rebounded in April, buoyed by more demand for aircraft and stronger business investment. The gains suggest economic growth may be holding steady this spring.

Orders for durable goods, items expected to last at least three years, rose 3.3 percent last month from March, the Commerce Department said Friday. That followed a 5.9 decline in March.

A measure of business investment plans increased 1.2 percent. And the government revised the March figure to show a 0.9 percent gain, instead of a slight decrease.

Companies ordered more machinery and electronic products last month, typically signs of confidence. More spending by businesses could ease fears that manufacturing could drag on the economy later this year.

Factories had been seeing fewer orders at the start of the year, in part because slower global growth had reduced demand for U.S. exports. Economists had also worried that across-the-board federal spending cuts and higher taxes might prompt businesses to cut back on orders.

Paul Ashworth, an economist with Capital Economics, said the April report suggests economic growth is holding up. He predicts growth in the April-June quarter will be at a rate of 2 percent to 2.5 percent. That's not much lower than the 2.5 percent rate reported for the January-March quarter.

Still, the payoff from the pickup in business investment may not come until the end of the quarter. That's because the government looks at shipments when it measures the gross domestic product, not orders. And shipments of goods that signal investment plans fell in April, reflecting weaker demand at the start of the year.

"Business investment appears to have started the second quarter on a weak note but should rebound over the final two months of the quarter," he said.

The April increase pushed total orders to $222.6 billion on a seasonally adjusted basis. That is 6.5 percent above the level of a year ago.

Orders for transportation goods gained 8.1 percent, reflecting a 16.1 percent jump in demand for commercial aircraft and a 53.3 percent increase in orders for military aircraft. Orders for motor vehicles increased 1.9 percent.

Excluding the volatile transportation category, orders rose 1.3 percent in April. That followed a 1.7 percent decline in March.

Still, other reports showed that factories continued to struggle in April.

The Institute for Supply Management reported factory activity barely expanded in April, held back by weaker hiring and less company stockpiling.

And manufacturing output dropped 0.4 percent last month, the Federal Reserve reported earlier this month. Auto companies cranked out fewer cars, factories made fewer consumer goods and most other industries reduced output.

One bright spot for the economy has been the American consumer, who has shown surprising resilience this year despite paying higher Social Security taxes.

Consumer spending rose from January through March at the fastest pace in more than two years. Auto sales have been rising over the past year. And Americans boosted their spending at retailers in April, from cars and clothes to electronics and appliances.

A better job market and a sustained recovery in housing have helped soften some of the impact of the tax increase. Since November, employers have added an average 208,000 jobs a month. That's up from just 138,000 jobs a month during the previous six months.

The overall economy grew at an annual rate of 2.5 percent in the January-March quarter, buoyed by the fastest rise in consumer spending in more than two years. Many economists believe growth is slowing to around 2 percent in the current April-June quarter and could stay near or slightly above that level for the rest of the year.

Top Swiss negotiator in tax disputes steps down

GENEVA (AP) ? Switzerland's top negotiator in talks to resolve disputes over tax evasion with Europe and the U.S. is stepping down.

The Finance Ministry said Friday that Michael Ambuehl will leave his post at the end of August and go into academia.

The move comes at a crucial time for Switzerland, which is trying to reach a deal with the U.S. to save Swiss banks and their employees from prosecution for aiding U.S. tax cheats.

During Ambuehl's three-year tenure, Switzerland sealed tax deals with Britain and Austria. A deal with neighboring Germany was blocked by that country's Parliament.

Previously Ambuehl was Bern's top negotiator on Iran, where Switzerland represents U.S. interests.

According to a ministry statement Ambuehl's boss, Finance Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf, "took note of this decision with regret."

LG Envoy II (U.S. Cellular)

It may seem like everyone out there wants the latest and greatest in feature-packed, giant-screen smartphones, but there's still a bunch of people that just need to make a call from time to time. And for that reason, companies like LG keep making flip phones like the Envoy II?not that there's anything wrong with that. We like a good simple cell phone ourselves, like our Editors' Choice, the Samsung Jitterbug Plus. Unfortunately, while the $69.99 LG Envoy II for U.S. Cellular may be simple, it isn't very good. It's less of a classic flip phone than it is simply stuck in the past.

Design and Call Quality
Design-wise, the Envoy II is your standard flip phone. It measures 3.9 by 2.0 by 0.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 3.7 ounces. The whole thing is made of matte black plastic with a lightly textured strip that runs across the middle. All external controls are on the left, including a covered, non-standard headphone jack, a volume rocker, and the power port.

There's a 1-inch monochrome LCD on the outside of the phone. It shows you the time, date, network, reception, ringer, and battery life. The phone opens smoothly, though the hinge feels flimsy, like you can break it off if you push too hard. Inside is a 2.2-inch display with just 176-by-144-pixel resolution. It looks terrible. Everything is blurry, like you're wearing someone else's glasses, and viewing angles are poor. You can control the size and style of the text, but it still looks small even on the largest setting. Thankfully, the phone has text-to-speech conversion, so you can have it read incoming messages aloud.

The lower half of the phone is home to your number keys, as well as a rather busy control pad. There's a standard five-button navigation pad, which is flanked by an additional seven function keys. That's a lot of buttons, but none of them are the keys to send or end a call?those are a little further down with the number keys. So what controls do you get? There are two function keys in either corner that correspond to commands on screen. There's also a button for the camera, speakerphone, alarm, text-to-speech, and voice commands. That's about three buttons too many. Some of those controls would've been better off left to the Settings menu.

The keys themselves are decent. They're dimly backlit, with decent separation and good travel. Of course, even the best number pad isn't ideal for texting, so if that's what you're after, you're better off with a keyboarded phone like the Samsung Freeform 4.

In New York City where I did my testing, U.S. Cellular phones use Sprint's network.?The Envoy II is a 2G device with no Wi-Fi. Reception was decent and voice quality is solid. Voices sound very good in the phone's earpiece; there's some light fuzz, but you need to turn the volume all the way up to hear it. Calls made with the phone are also solid, though voices were a little muted from aggressive noise cancellation. There's some side tone in the earpiece, which helps prevent you from talking too loudly. The speakerphone sounds okay, but is not loud enough to hear outside. And calls sounded good over a Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset, though the voice command system was rather fussy; it worked properly less than half the times I tried. Battery life was average at 6 hours and 14 minutes of talk time.

Apps, Multimedia, and Conclusions
You don't get much in the way of apps. The main menu has 12 icons you can choose from, which range from the phone book and text messages to the Settings menu and Uno. Most of the apps can be found under the Tools menu. You get a calculator, calendar, stopwatch, tip calculator, unit converter, and world clock. There's also a programmable menu called My Menu, but since it's buried under Tools, it isn't terribly convenient to use.

There's an app store from U.S. Cellular, as well as a place to buy new ring tones. You can also browse the Web, via the Myriad 6.2-powered Web browser, which reads WAP sites. But between the WAP browser, the slow data speeds, and the poor display, this isn't a good phone for getting online.

Multimedia support is pretty much out. There is no music or video playback. Even if there were, the phone has a skimpy 121.5MB of free storage, no microSD card slot, and a non-standard 2.5mm headphone jack. So you probably don't have compatible headphones, and there's little room to store anything except photos.

Speaking of photos, the LG Envoy II has a 1.3-megapixel camera. Pictures taken with the phone aren't terrible for what they are?the camera actually does a decent job with color?but there is virtually no detail. There's also no good way to transfer photos off the phone. You have to send them as a picture message or use Bluetooth.

The LG Envoy II uses the classic flip phone design, but it's far from a classic. On U.S. Cellular, you're better off with the Samsung Chrono 2. It has a similar design, but it costs less and you can use it as a music player. There's also the Kyocera DuraPro, which is also a flip phone, but with a much bigger, rugged design. It has a better camera than the Envoy II, as well as a much sharper screen. If you prefer to text, you should check out Samsung Freeform 4, which has a BlackBerry-style keyboard and better multimedia support than the Envoy II. There's also the LG Freedom. We haven't reviewed it yet, but it combines a touch-screen display with a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Our Editors' Choice for simple phones remains with the Samsung Jitterbug Plus. It's extremely easy to use, and has free 24-hour operator assistance, though you'll need service through GreatCall to get it.?

Detroit Tigers just Glad to Be Facing Someone Other than Texas Rangers

detroit tigers

David Richard-USA TODAY Sports

There is little doubt that the Detroit Tigers have an explosive team and an above average pitching staff. They absolutely are one of the toughest teams in Major League Baseball and there is no way around that. What they also were this past weekend is just another victim of the Texas Rangers who still make a pretty good case for being the best team in the game. After winning two of three from the Houston Astros it must have felt like playing the AL all-star team to face the Rangers. The Rangers promptly beat the Tigers three out of four games.

Over that stretch the Tigers lost precious ground to a streaking Cleveland Indians team. The good deal for the Tigers is they knew they were just about to face the Indians. Though the Indians aren?t an easy assignment for anyone right now, the Rangers seemed to clearly have the Tigers number. The opening game of the Indians series served to snap the AL Central leader?s winning streak and draw the Tigers closer by a game. They are playing well in the second game as well and appear to be ready to fight for a series win if not a sweep.

I think there are reasons a team like the Tigers wind up winning it all or almost winning it all year in and year out. They lose four of five games but still were able to get their heads on straight for the big division rival series. The Indians very well might come back and pull away further but there should be no deceiving going on for the part of the Indians. The Tigers are not going anywhere all season long and anyone planning to get to the post season will have to take them down directly in order to do it. That isn?t an easy task for anyone other than the Rangers at this point.

Calls continue for Mayor Ford to answer crack cocaine allegations

CTVNews.ca Staff

Last Updated Thursday, May 23, 2013 12:33PM EDT

Calls are continuing for Toronto Mayor Rob Ford to address week-old allegations about a video in which he is reported to be shown smoking crack cocaine.

The mayor has remained largely silent on the accusations, which he called ?ridiculous? late last week.

Toronto Coun. Josh Matlow told CP24 on Thursday that the allegations against the mayor, which have made international headlines, have brought negative attention to the city.

?It doesn?t do a good service for Toronto. I hope that the mayor will come forward and just address this. Help us move forward,? Matlow said.

?We can?t force somebody to speak. That?s the mayor?s decision whether or not he?d like to. But it?s not good enough just to get your brother to go and do a press conference.?

On Wednesday, Coun. Doug Ford addressed the allegations for the first time, telling reporters that the mayor told him the allegations were ?untrue.?

?Rob?s telling me these stories are untrue, that these accusations are ridiculous,? Doug Ford said. ?And I believe him.?

He added that his brother has been subject to intense media scrutiny ever since he took office and that the mayor would not be ?pressured? into making a statement regarding the alleged video.

Toronto Coun. Ana Bailao also called on the mayor Thursday to address the allegations, saying that the scandal has been ?distracting? for councillors.

?I think Torontonians want to hear from the mayor,? she said. ?These are very, very serious allegations.

?It?s very distracting for city hall? Us councillors are making an effort to concentrate on our business, on our work. But it?s obviously distracting to have this big cloud on top of our heads and not being addressed.?

Reports of the alleged video first surfaced last week on U.S. website Gawker and later in the Toronto Star.

Both media outlets said they had viewed a video that appears to show the mayor smoking crack cocaine. The Star reporters also allege that in the video, the mayor makes offensive remarks about Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau and members of the Don Bosco Eagles -- a local high school football team he?s been coaching for years.

Ford was relieved of his coaching duties on Wednesday by the Toronto Catholic District School Board, who said it would ?pursue a different direction? with a new volunteer coach.

A board spokesperson said the decision had nothing to do with the current controversy around the alleged video.

TCDSB had been reviewing the mayor?s coaching role at Don Bosco since he made disparaging remarks about the school and its football players during a media interview in March, suggesting it was a ?tough school? where a lot of kids ?come from gangs? and ?broken homes.?

The existence and content of the video has not been authenticated by CTV News.

Scientific Tooth Fairies Investigate Neanderthal Breast-Feeding

This model of a molar shows color-coded barium banding patterns that reveal weaning age.

This model of a molar shows color-coded barium banding patterns that reveal weaning age.

Ian Harrowell, Christine Austin, Manish Arora/Harvard School of Public Health

When it comes to weaning, humans are weird.

Our closest relatives, chimpanzees and gorillas, breast-feed their offspring for several years. Some baby orangutans nurse until they are 7 years old.

But modern humans wean much earlier. In preindustrial societies, babies stop nursing after about two years. Which raises the question: How did we get that way? When did we make the evolutionary shift from ape-like parenting, to the short breast-feeding period of humans?

Scientists combed the fossil record for clues, but they came up empty until one researcher decided to play tooth fairy.

Manish Arora studies tooth chemistry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York. He knows that teeth hold many secrets.

"You can almost visualize tooth development in terms of growth rings that you would see in a tree," says Arora.

Like tree rings, the layers of enamel and dentin that accumulate day after day mark the passage of time. And the compounds in the enamel can tell scientists a lot about the tooth owner's early growth and development.

But Arora was looking for something very specific: a marker in the tooth that would reveal the timing of weaning. So, he meticulously recorded the breast-feeding habits of women and their babies.

Years later, when the children started to place their lost baby teeth under their pillows, Arora was there to collect them. Luckily, this tooth fairy stand-in had a research grant.

"They do get a small reimbursement for every tooth they donate," Arora says.

When Arora and his colleagues started to analyze the chemical makeup of the teeth, they noticed an interesting pattern in the distribution of the element barium.

"During the period of breast-feeding, the barium levels in teeth were higher," Arora says. "At weaning, the levels of barium in teeth started to drop."

Barium is calcium's cousin (it's in the same column on the periodic table), and it goes where calcium goes. Over the years, it accumulates in our bones. When a mother begins nursing, some of that barium migrates into her breast milk, and eventually, into her baby's teeth. Arora had found his marker.

Top: Lines on a 100,000-year-old Neanderthal tooth mark the passage of time. Bottom: The distribution of barium shows dietary transition: low barium before birth (1), high barium during breast-feeding (2) and falling barium as the Neanderthal transitions to a mixed diet (3).

Alyson Hurt, Adam Cole / NPR/Christine Austin / Westmead Centre for Oral Health

He could take a tooth and tell when that tooth's owner stopped nursing. His colleague Tanya Smith, who studies human evolution at Harvard, knew just the tooth to test first.

"It's a first molar tooth from a Neanderthal from a site in Belgium called Scladina," Smith says.

The tooth is 100,000 years old, and perfectly preserved. Analyzing the tooth's barium distribution, the researchers determined that this Neanderthal started weaning after about 7 months, and then transitioned to a mixed diet. At 15 months, the barium signal dropped abruptly, as if mother and child had been separated.

The results were published in Nature.

Smith says that applying the same technique to other fossilized teeth will help paint a clearer picture of the evolution of human weaning. The shorter nursing times would have given mothers the freedom to reproduce more frequently and gather food for the group. Now we're a step closer to finding out when and how this shift happened.

Arora adds that there's another important application: studying human nursing today. Most breast-feeding studies are questionnaire-based, and can be foiled by the faulty memories of their subjects. But with Arora's method, scientists have access to a dental record that always tells the truth.

Total Recall: Bradley Cooper's Best Movies

We count down the best-reviewed work of the Hangover Part III star.

Bradley Cooper

Before he was an Oscar-nominated star of The Silver Linings Playbook, Bradley Cooper was one of Hollywood's go-to guys for the sort of rakishly smarmy character that every truly great R-rated comedy really needs -- comedies like, say, The Hangover, which shifted Cooper's career into high gear in 2009. This week, as the Hangover trilogy prepares for its presumably Jeong-filled conclusion, we're taking a moment to look back at some of the critical highlights from his filmography -- and given that he only made his cinematic debut a little over 10 years ago, those highlights are more numerous (and more diverse) than you might think. It's time for Total Recall!

45%

For a fairly good-sized portion of the aughts, it seemed like Jim Carrey had lost the will to be funny -- and while his newfound focus on sharpening his dramatic chops produced a number of fine films (including Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), it was hard for fans to keep from wishing he'd just cut loose with a good old-fashioned laffer after awhile. Sadly, when Carrey returned to broad comedy with Yes Man in 2008, the critics seemed to wish he'd stayed away even longer -- although audiences clearly responded to the tale of a man who decides to turn his life around by saying "yes" to everything. Based on a memoir written by humorist Danny Wallace and featuring a supporting cast that included Cooper and Zooey Deschanel, it found favor with critics like Tim Evans of Sky Movies, who mused, "It's that rare thing - an example of Hollywood getting hold of a good idea, working on it... and not screwing it up."

47%

The idea of a film adaptation of The A-Team kicked around Hollywood for years before finally grinding into gear, but all that extra time in development didn't end up producing the box office blockbuster 20th Century Fox was hoping for. Still, Joe Carnahan's cheerfully ludicrous big-screen take on the '80s TV hit about a crew of war vets-turned-heroes for hire (here played by Liam Neeson, Sharlto Copley, Quinton Jackson, and Cooper) resonated with a number of critics who showed up looking for an undemanding comedy/action thriller and came away satisfied -- including Entertainment Weekly's Owen Gleiberman, who marveled, "It's trash so compacted it glows."

48%

While it wasn't a major critical or commercial success, 2012's Hit and Run is, at the very least, an inspiration for every actor who begins his film career with a bit role like "Guy vomiting at party" -- which is, not coincidentally, just what Dax Shepard did, a scant 14 years before making his screenwriting (and co-directing) debut with this low-budget comedy about a Witness Protection enrollee (Shepard) whose girlfriend (Kristen Bell) receives a job offer that puts him in danger of his shady past, which includes a trio of ticked-off former accomplices (including a rather hilariously bewigged Bradley Cooper). "Normally it'd be an insult to say the most interesting thing about a movie is one of the actor's do's," admitted Simon Miraudo of Quickflix, "but seriously, you've got to see this thing sitting on Cooper's head."

65%

At first glance, My Little Eye's 65 percent might not seem like such a great accomplishment. But when you take into consideration the fact that it's an early-aughts horror movie about a group of people being killed for fun as part of a jury-rigged "reality show" for depraved weirdos, it's pretty impressive (consider, for example, the critical fates that befell the similarly themed Halloween Resurrection and the House on Haunted Hill remake). While it would be disingenuous to argue that this is anyone's idea of great cinema, if you're in the mood for a confidently nasty slasher with a handful of unexpected wrinkles (not to mention an early, effectively creepy appearance from Cooper), you could do worse than this. "It's a lot of style over very little substance," admitted Rich Cline of Shadows on the Wall. "But there are just enough twists in the tale to make it far more satisfying than almost any horror film in recent memory."

70%

A sort of Flowers for Algernon with an action thriller's pace and zippier cinematography, Neil Burger's Limitless started from a timeless premise -- what if you could finally tap into your full potential, even if it came with a terrible price? -- and used it to add some extra dramatic heft to what might otherwise have been a fairly routine tale of gangland intrigue and corporate skullduggery. While a number of critics carped that Limitless seemed like the work of filmmakers who were operating at far less than 100 percent capacity, audiences turned out to the tune of a tidy $79 million gross -- and most scribes agreed with Christy Lemire of the Associated Press, who argued, "You could pick the script apart for impossibilities. But why bother? It's much more enjoyable to shut your brain off and have a good time."
