Object of the month: Adolescence everyday life | Eduardo Frei ...

In Chile, during the 1950s and the 1960s, it was very common for adolescents to share their rooms at home. Families were larger and used to have more neighborhood life rather than access to technologies.

In Chile, during the 1950s and the 1960s, the traditional structure of a middle class family consisted primarily in a father that worked away from home; meanwhile the mother would take care of the children and manage household economy. In the case of the Frei Ruiz-Tagle family, it was just that way. While Eduardo Frei Montalva was doing his utmost for his political activities, Maria Ruiz-Tagle was in charge of the housework and caring of their seven children, four girls and three boys. During this period, men were the heads of the households, and women were slowly beginning to be part of the world of work, outside the home.

From this concept, the life of a traditional adolescent of the period was divided into two subjects; studies and home, where the mother figure was always present. In this particular home, it was Maria Ruiz-Tagle, who was always worried about knitting and sewing things (like uniforms, pajamas, dresses, sweaters, and bedspreads, among others) for her children and grandchildren.

Young people spent a lot of hours reading adventure books, cartoons and magazines like El Peneca.

On the other hand, youth were accustomed to sharing everything they owned, from rooms to books, and also some games like marbles. They spent a lot of hours reading adventure books and cartoons. They used to memorize and recite poems, collect trading cards (of animals, cartoons, and football players, among others) until they completed albums.

Of course they used to listen to the radio, which was very important at Chilean homes. It was the mass media that people used in order to listen to novels, football, music and news, and it also kept people informed about what was happening across the country and abroad. Television was arriving at Chilean homes and it was not so common to own one as it is nowadays. Here in Eduardo Frei Montalva House Museum, you can find some radios that belonged to the Frei Montalva?s home which are true collection pieces nowadays. One of them is an Espey radio which is located in the boy?s room; it would accompany them on their free times. Imagination also played an important role, because they used to see the pictures of what was being told on the radio. Nowadays, these radios are part of the objects that can be seen when visiting of the house.

The street, the neighborhood and the friends

In general terms, in that period, it was very common for everybody who had the chance, to finish primary education, because students left school early in order to work and contribute to the household economy. Thanks to the educational reform (its purposes were to end with illiteracy and to increase the country?s development) carried out by by Eduardo Frei Montalva during his government between 1964 and 1970, education improved.

Women were more frequently incorporating to higher education. There is the the example of the Frei-Ruiz Tagle girls, who studied at Colegio Universitario Ingl?s; one of the few mixed schools at that time. Unlike their mother, the four of them attended College and studied traditional majors for women. Irene studied History and Geography, Carmen studied Preschool Education, Isabel Margarita studied Family Education and M?nica undertook Secretarial studies.

The three sons, Eduardo, Francisco and Jorge attended primary and secondary education at the same school their father did, Instituto de Humanidades Luis Campino, and then studied engineering majors in College.

At the House Museum, you can find the boy?s bedroom, which has different objects of the period, such as: a globe, a leather satchel for school, uniforms and different pictures taken at Instituto Luis Campino (which used to be located at the Centro de Extensi?n de la Universidad Cat?lica, its main campus on Alameda Avenue).

Together with the school, the typical adolescents of those years spent most of the time at home or around the neighborhood. At that period, neighbors were almost like siblings, and used to share books and games. Also, friends, neighbors and family visits were common, and they created strong bonds of friendship and camaraderie.

In the afternoons, it was very common especially in spring and summer, to play hopscotch, marbles, French skipping or skipping rope in parks or streets, and also, to sing together beautiful melodies and popular songs. Children and youth would share their books and magazines such as: ?El Peneca?, ?Condorito?, ?Estadio? cartoons and other magazines like ?Mec?nica Popular?, which were worn out due to the heavy use of different generations.

Floods swamp central Europe

PRAGUE (Reuters) - Volunteers piled up sandbags to keep a swollen river from overwhelming the Czech capital's historic centre on Monday after floods across central Europe forced factories to closed, drove thousands from their homes and killed at least eight people.

In Prague, capital of the Czech Republic, floods forced as many as 3,000 to evacuate their homes as rising waters threated the historic Old Town, a major tourist draw. This verified video was uploaded to YouTube by Vil?m ?rail.

Six people died in the Czech Republic from the worst flooding in a decade and a state of emergency was declared, while in Austria two people died and another two were missing.

The flooding, which also affected parts of Germany, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland, sent shares in reinsurers Munich Re and Hannover Re down by about 2.5 percent, with markets anticipating big claims from property owners once the waters recede.

The flooding arose from several days of torrential rainfall. In some places two months worth of rain fell in just a few days.

Carmaker Volkswagen temporarily shut its plant in Zwickau, in the eastern German state of Saxony, because the flooding stopped workers reaching the factory.

In the centre of the west German town of Passau, people took off their shoes and rolled up their trousers to walk through the ankle-deep water.

The last time central Europe saw similar floods was in 2002, when 17 people were killed in the Czech Republic, and damage estimated at 20 billion euros ($26 billion) was inflicted.

Officials in Prague, the Czech capital listed by the U.N. cultural agency as a World Heritage Site, said they did not anticipate the waters of the Vltava river would reach 2002 levels.

But they were taking no chances. They shut the metro system and, in streets near the river, soldiers put up metal fences - the sort of flood defenses ordered after the disaster 11 years ago. Elsewhere, volunteers built walls of sandbags.

Tigers at Prague zoo were tranquilized and moved out of an enclosure at risk from flooding.

Czech officials said the flood defenses in Prague should hold, but that the river level was likely to rise again on Tuesday morning. "The story is not yet over here," said Czech Environment Minister Tomas Chalupa.

CAFES SUBMERGED

The Charles Bridge, a favorite spot for tourists that dates to the 14th century, was closed. Tree trunks floated by in the muddy brown water. A riverside path that is below street level, is usually populated with cyclists and people sitting at cafes, was under water on Monday.

"We left England yesterday and it was sunny and warm. We didn't expect this, we don't even have our raincoats," said British tourist Alison Tadman, who came to Prague with her husband, Adrian, to celebrate her 47th birthday.

She and her husband were sheltering in a McDonald's restaurant. "We're pretty disappointed," she said.

Some of the worst flooding was around the Danube river, which starts in Germany and winds its way through countries including Austria, Slovakia and Hungary on its way to the Black Sea. The river was swollen by heavy rain at the weekend.

In Germany, the interior minister flew to flood-hit regions on Monday and Chancellor Angela Merkel was preparing to go on Tuesday, government spokesman Steffen Seibert said.

How her government responds to the emergency could have some bearing on the outcome of a nationwide election in September.

Germany declared a state of emergency for parts of Saxony, Bavaria and Thuringia. This verified video, uploaded to YouTube by feeeedr, shows high water in Saxony's third-largest city, Chemnitz.

Shipping was stopped on parts of the Danube and Rhine rivers in Germany, and along the entire Austrian stretch of the Danube, because of the high waters. The rivers are important arteries for moving grains, coals and other commodities.

Thousands of people living in low-lying areas in Austria and the Czech Republic had to be evacuated from their homes. In the Austrian town of Schaerding, a duck swam across a road intersection, past the gates of a flooded cemetery.

The flooding killed five people in the Czech Republic over the weekend and on Monday the death toll went up to six - a worker electrocuted while trying to switch off a flooded electricity transformer 50 km (30 miles) east of Prague, the Czech news agency CTK reported.

Hundreds were forced to evacuate in parts of Upper Austria. This footage is of the city of Steyr, where two rivers meet. The verified video was uploaded to YouTube by lokuz25.

In the Austrian city of Salzburg, 160 passengers were put up overnight in army barracks after the floods stranded their train. Austrian Foreign Minister Michael Spindelegger told reporters the situation in some areas was "very fraught."

The risk on Monday was that the flood danger could follow the course of the Danube river downstream to other European countries along its route.

Workers erected flood barriers along the banks of the Danube where it passes through the Slovak capital, Bratislava, and police shut several roads.

"We are getting bad news from Germany and Austria. We have to do all we can to protect ... the capital," Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said.

In Hungary, whose capital Budapest also sits on the banks of the Danube, state media quoted Gyorgy Bakondi, head of the National Disaster Authority, as saying that 400 people were working on flood defenses.

He said water levels in the river could reach or even exceed the height seen in the record flooding in 2002.

Some climate scientists cited a possible link between extreme weather such as flooding and climate change. The warmer the air, the more moisture it holds. A study last year by a United Nations panel of scientists said heavy rainfalls will become more common in this century.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. senators dressed down senior military leaders Tuesday, led by female lawmakers, combat veterans and former prosecutors who insisted that sexual assault in the ranks has cost the services the trust and respect of the American people as well as the nation's men and women in uniform.

Summoned to Coingress, Army Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the beribboned four-star chiefs of the service branches conceded in an extraordinary hearing that they had faltered in dealing with sexual assault. One said assaults were "like a cancer" in the military.

But they strongly opposed congressional efforts to strip commanders of their traditional authority to decide whether to level charges in their units.

Members of the Senate Armed Services Committee, especially the panel's seven female senators, grilled the chiefs about whether the military's mostly male leadership understands differences between relatively minor sexual offences and serious crimes that deserve swift and decisive justice.

"Not every single commander necessarily wants women in the force. Not every single commander believes what a sexual assault is. Not every single commander can distinguish between a slap on the ass and a rape because they merge all of these crimes together," said Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, a Democrat.

Frustration among the senators seemed to boil over as they discussed recent high-profile cases and statistics on sexual assault that underscored the challenges the Defence Department and Congress face.

Sen. John McCain, a Republican and a Navy veteran of Vietnam, said a woman came to him the previous night and said her daughter wanted to join the military. She asked McCain if he could give her his unqualified support.

"I could not," McCain said. "I cannot overstate my disgust and disappointment over the continued reports of sexual misconduct in our military. We've been talking about the issue for years, and talk is insufficient."

The committee is considering seven legislative proposals, including one introduced by Gillibrand that would deny commanders the authority to decide when criminal charges are filed and remove the ability of senior officers to convene courts-martial.

Dempsey and the service chiefs warned against making such dramatic changes. Removing commanders from the military justice process, Dempsey said, would undercut their ability to preserve good order and discipline in their units.

"We cannot simply legislate our way out of this problem," said Gen. Ray Odierno, the Army's chief of staff. "Without equivocation, I believe maintaining the central role of commander in our military justice system is absolutely critical to any solution."

But Gillibrand defended her proposal, which has garnered 18 co-sponsors in two weeks. She said victims of sexual assault are reluctant to report crimes to their commanders because they fear their allegations will be dismissed and they might face retaliation. Aggressive reforms in the military's legal code are needed to force cultural changes, she said.

"You have lost the trust of the men and women who rely on you," Gillibrand said. "They're afraid to report. They think their careers will be over. They fear retaliation. They fear being blamed. That is our biggest challenge right there."

Dempsey and the service chiefs told the committee they back Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel's April recommendation to change the Uniform Code of Military Justice and largely strip commanding officers of the power to toss out a military verdict. That change is included in several of the Senate proposals including Gillibrand's and is likely to be adopted by the House Armed Services Committee on Wednesday in its version of the annual defence policy bill.

The Pentagon estimated in a recent report that as many as 26,000 military members may have been sexually assaulted last year, up from an estimated 19,000 assaults in 2011, based on an anonymous survey of military personnel. While the number of sexual assaults that members of the military actually reported rose 6 per cent to 3,374 in 2012, thousands of victims were still unwilling to come forward despite new oversight and assistance programs aimed at curbing the crimes, the report said.

ASUS MeMo Pad HD 7 coming to the US for $149; emerging markets get an 8GB $129 version

Joining ASUS' MeMo Pad family today are a couple of self-explanatory models: the MeMo Pad HD 7 and the MeMo Pad FHD 10. While we've already got to test out the 10-inch model, this is the first we've seen of the 7-incher. Like the current Nexus 7, which this is going to replace, it has a 1,280 x 800 screen. With this new generation, though, it adds 5-megapixel and 1.2-megapixel cameras, SonicMaster audio and an ARM Cortex A7 quad-core CPU. Oh, and it adds a microSD slot and a micro-USB socket, two things the Nexus 7 doesn't have. Unlike a Nexus product, the OS is the slightly older Android 4.0, and ASUS hasn't yet said when the tablet will be available for an update.

The big news here, however, is the price. As Chairman Jonney Shih said during its reveal, we needed our cameras, because it'll arrive priced at a pretty incredible $149 for 16GB and $129 for 8GB. In addition, he clarified that the super-low-cost $129 version is aimed at emerging markets for now, though the $149 model is thankfully headed to countries like the US. We're not sure when that will be, but for now, with these prices and specs, consider us tempted. In the meantime, head past the break for the full hands-on treatment.

Mom's Education Impacts Adult Kids' Depression Risk - Psych Central

A new study shows that children of women who didn?t graduate from high school have double the risk of experiencing major?depression in early adulthood, compared to children of mothers who graduated.

?Our research indicates that a mother?s lack of high school education has a robust impact on her child?s risk of major depressive episode in early adulthood,? said senior author Am?lie Quesnel-Vall?e, Ph.D.,?of McGill University.

The higher risk of depression in children of mothers with less than a high school education could not be attributed to parental history of depression, early life adversity, or the children?s own education and income in early adulthood.

The study is the first in Canada to distinguish the impact of a mother and father?s education on depression in early adulthood.

For the study, researchers looked at a sample of 1,267 individuals from Statistics Canada?s National Population Health Survey.

Participants were first interviewed in 1994, when they were between 12 and 24 years old, and living with their parents. They were then followed for 12 years, and their risk of major depressive episode was assessed between the ages of 22 and 36.

?Depression in early adulthood strikes at a critical time,? said Quesnel-Vall?e.

?An individual may be pursuing studies or apprenticeships, or starting a career or a family.? A disruption caused by depression can potentially derail these events and have lifelong consequences.?

Interestingly, the father?s level of education has no impact.

?This, along with the fact that the effect of mother?s education was not explained by the children?s own education or income, suggests that mothers? parenting skills may be at play here,? she said.

Alison Park, a researcher at the Institut National de Sant? Publique du Qu?bec who worked on the research for her master?s degree, said, ?Education gives people practical skills, such as communication, analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as an increased sense of mastery.?

?A better-educated mother might be more confident in coping with difficulties arising from child-rearing.? This increased confidence and feeling of self-mastery might serve as a model for her children.?

The research is published in the journal Social Psychiatry and Psychiatric Epidemiology.

She coulda been a star! Is that T-shirt on Megan a signal of bad things to come for the "Mad Men" character?

Is Megan Draper long for this world? Or rather, is she long for the world of ?Mad Men?s? New York in 1968, a place that is rapidly going downhill?

Those used to the scrubbed-clean New York of today may forget that in the late 1960s the Big Apple was getting wormy, fast: Sirens wail almost constantly outside the high-rise apartment building on Central Park Megan shares with her husband Don Draper; Don?s co-worker Peggy is so afraid of their neighborhood?s fellow residents she actually stabbed boyfriend Abe; and Don?s apartment has been the scene of a spooky home invasion. Is this the world a wide-eyed soap opera actress can live in?

Or is she gonna die? Because since ?The Better Half? episode of May 26, viewers and critics have begun speculating on whether show creator Matthew Weiner is telegraphing a grisly end for the ?Zou Zou Bisou? crooner -- and have begun piecing together clues that would tie her to the real-life murder of actress Sharon Tate, the late wife of director Roman Polanski, who was pregnant when she was stabbed by followers of Charles Manson in August 1969.

It would be a very strange turn for the series if that happened; it?s not as though there?s never been sudden death on ?Mad Men? before, but something of this nature, with a well-established character who?s been given a lot of screen time ever since she popped up in the third season -- well, it seems hard to imagine.

But let?s go over some of the imaginings that have cropped up elsewhere.

Where it started:Redditors started the discussion about the shirt Megan wore while standing on her balcony and telling Don he?s been emotionally distant. The shirt, a striking white T with a red star emblazoned across the chest was an exact copy of one Sharon Tate wore in a 1967 (Warning: Partial nudity at link) photo shoot for Esquire. It also kind of looks like a target.

Where it got ?confirmed?: @BhisaRockstar -- who says her dad was behind the Esquire photo -- asked the show?s costume designer, @JanieBryant on Twitter whether that was a coincidence. The answer? ?No coincidence!? Still, in a chat with The Daily Beast, Bryant said that viewers might be doing too much of a liberal interpretation: "In terms of the T-shirt, Matthew Weiner had just said, 'It would be great to have something political.' I had done so much research of different political T-shirts, and found a picture of Sharon Tate from Esquire magazine. It's the Vietnam star. We saw a little bit of how Megan was so upset after Bobby Kennedy was shot, it really is so much a part of the turmoil happening during that period -- really this is the time filled with civil unrest. (And New York) was really a decaying city."

Where critics seemed to know things ahead of time: Back in March, when black-and-white promotional photos of the cast were released before the new season started, bloggers Tom & Lorenzo likened portrayer Jessica Pare?s duds specifically to a ?Sharon Tate kind of route, which fits her character.?

Where even the promoposter held clues: The folks at Uproxx noted that the colored-pencil drawing used to promote the series new season featured what could be perceived as two Dons, each heading in different directions down a one-way street -? one in a dark suit, walking away from a crime scene holding a woman?s hand, the other in a lighter suit, walking toward a policeman in the background. ?It?s worth noting this: Sharon Tate?s murder was one of mistaken identity,? added writer Dustin Rowles, a comment that hearkens back to Abe's stabbing and that Megan is playing twins on her soap opera.

Where everybody gets into the act: Others have noted clues dropped elsewhere throughout the season, both on the show -- Sally was pointedly reading ?Rosemary?s Baby,? which was directed by Polanski (Zap2It); the photo of Tate in the T-shirt was reportedly taken on the set of ?Rosemary?s Baby? (Philly.com); and so on.

But, as the folks at Slate.com make sure we understand: ?Mad Men? is not necessarily about drawing literal conclusions; writer June Thomas notes that creator Matthew Weiner is a master of ?misdirection? and point out that Pete?s driving school episode, ?Signal 30,? had a title that referred to a driving safety movie in which images of dead and injured drivers were shown. So far, while he?s not happy, Pete is still intact. Still, adds Thomas, ?I am very worried about Megan.?

An AMC representative declined to comment.

And so it seems are many other fans of ?Mad Men.? Stay safe, Megan ?- and don?t go walking in Central Park after sundown!
